This unfortunate tragedy has sent shock waves through California’s Catholic community. A 65-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Bishop David O’Connell. O’Connell was found shot in the chest in his Hacienda Heights, California, home. Authorities say two guns were found at the suspect’s home after a warrant was served. Personal tributes have rolled in for the Catholic bishop. Bishop Dave, as he was called, was originally from Ireland and was said to have been passionate about the needs of his fellow immigrants.
According to Angelus, a weekly Catholic magazine published by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, O’Connell was named an auxiliary bishop in 2015 by Pope Francis, in the years after he served as an episcopal vicar for the archdiocese’s San Gabriel Pastoral Region. Pray for the families of all involved, God expects us to show compassion in tragedy.
