Musk and Ramaswamy Plan to Use DOGE to Cut Funds for Planned Parenthood

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have pledged to reduce government spending and “downsize the federal government” as the leaders of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), according to an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal. Pro-life advocates are lauding their intention to specifically target Planned Parenthood, the prominent U.S. abortion provider.

In their Wall Street Journal article, Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, and Ramaswamy, founder of the pharmaceutical company Roivant Sciences, expressed that they see a “historic opportunity” to address a long-standing issue.

They pointed out that many government enforcement decisions and discretionary spending are not determined by the elected president or his appointees, but rather by countless unelected civil servants who feel secure in their positions due to civil service protections.

“This undermines democratic principles and contradicts the vision of the Founding Fathers, imposing significant direct and indirect costs on taxpayers,” they wrote.

Earlier this month, President-elect Donald Trump announced the creation of this new efficiency department, appointing Musk and Ramaswamy to lead it.

According to Trump, the DOGE will provide guidance to his administration on dismantling bureaucratic structures, reducing excessive regulations, cutting wasteful spending, and restructuring federal agencies—efforts deemed essential to the “Save America” movement.

Musk and Ramaswamy highlighted that progressive organizations, particularly Planned Parenthood, are significant offenders, with the latter receiving “nearly $300 million annually in federal funding,” a substantial expense.

However, Planned Parenthood’s own fact sheet suggests that the actual figure may be much higher, as the organization reportedly received close to $700 million in taxpayer funding last year while performing a record 392,000 abortions—amounting to nearly $2 million daily.

In response to Musk and Ramaswamy’s plans, Planned Parenthood has voiced its opposition, claiming their services would be at risk if their proposals are enacted.

“Musk and Ramaswamy are making it clear how they plan to wield their influence: by denying essential care and disrupting our public health system, of which Planned Parenthood is a vital component—all under the guise of ‘government efficiency.’ We’ve faced these types of attacks before and successfully defended against them during Trump’s first term; Planned Parenthood health centers are still operational, serving millions nationwide,” stated Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Despite potential challenges in defunding Planned Parenthood, the DOGE leaders emphasize that the U.S. Constitution will guide their reform efforts, particularly citing two Supreme Court decisions that could help reverse extensive executive power expansions.

Pro-life supporters argue that even if DOGE encounters hurdles, President-elect Trump could enforce the Hyde Amendment across federal agencies, which prohibits the use of federal funds for abortions except in specific circumstances, such as to save a mother’s life or in cases of rape or incest.

Brent Leatherwood, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, reached out to Trump’s transition team urging him to issue an executive order reinstating the Hyde Amendment.

“By committing to the full enforcement of the Hyde Amendment through an executive order,” Leatherwood wrote, “President Trump can renew the focus on protecting life and respecting the deeply held beliefs of taxpayers against government overreach.”

Meanwhile, the DOGE aims to eliminate overspending by July 4, 2026.

“There is no better gift for our nation on its 250th anniversary than to deliver a federal government that aligns with the values of our Founders,” they stated in the Wall Street Journal.

Pro-life leaders, including Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action, have reacted positively to the announcement.

Faith leaders have also responded, noting that God may be utilizing unexpected figures to withdraw funding from what they consider the “satanic” operations of Planned Parenthood.

“We are living in historic times. Who could have imagined that two billionaires with no professed faith would lead the charge against the Planned Parenthood project?” Eric Metaxas remarked to ChurchLeaders. “This demonstrates that God often accomplishes His best work outside of the church. If only the church could recognize this and awaken.”

Worship leader Sean Feucht added, “God can use anyone to fulfill His purposes on earth. When weak politicians failed to act on what was right for decades, He turned to two non-religious billionaires to make it happen.”
