About Tina Turner
Tina Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, is a legendary American singer, songwriter, and actress. She rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in the 1960s and 1970s, captivating audiences with her powerful voice, energetic performances, and electrifying stage presence. Turner’s music spanned various genres, including rock, soul, R&B, and pop, earning her the title “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”
Born and raised in Nutbush, Tennessee, Turner began her music career at a young age, initially singing in church choirs. She met musician Ike Turner in the late 1950s and joined his band, eventually marrying him. The duo achieved significant success with hits like “River Deep – Mountain High” and “Proud Mary,” but their personal and professional relationship was marred by abuse and turmoil. Turner ultimately left the abusive marriage in the mid-1970s, embarking on a solo career that would solidify her status as a music icon.
In the 1980s, Turner experienced a remarkable comeback with her solo album “Private Dancer,” which spawned hits such as “What’s Love Got to Do with It” and “We Don’t Need Another Hero.” She won multiple Grammy Awards and gained international acclaim for her soulful vocals and dynamic performances. Turner’s stage presence and energetic live shows became legendary, earning her a devoted fan base.
Beyond her musical achievements, Tina Turner’s story is one of resilience and triumph over adversity. She shared her experiences of domestic abuse and became an advocate for victims of such violence. In 1993, she released her autobiography, “I, Tina,” which further shed light on her life and struggles. Her life story was later adapted into the biographical film “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” earning actress Angela Bassett critical acclaim for her portrayal of Turner.
Tina Turner announced her retirement from the music industry in 2009, marking the end of her touring career. She became a Swiss citizen in 2013, residing in Küsnacht, Switzerland. Turner’s influence and impact on popular music and culture remain significant, and she is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential singers in history.
