According to a recent survey reported by Newsweek[1], Americans are divided over the term “woke.” The term has been used to describe what they call “people who are socially and politically aware and who advocate for social justice and equality.”
However, it has also been used as an insult by some who see that it represents political correctness or excessive sensitivity. Which has been used to cancel shows and other businesses that don’t agree with the “woke” philosophy.
The survey found that 41% of respondents saw the term as a compliment, while 40% saw it as an insult. The remaining 19% were unsure or had no opinion.
The divide was particularly notable among different age groups. Younger respondents were more likely to view “woke” as a compliment, with 50% of those aged 18-34 saying so. In contrast, only 29% of those aged 55 and older viewed it positively.
The survey also found that political affiliation played a role in how the term was perceived. Democrats were more likely to see “woke” as a compliment, with 57% saying so, compared to only 21% of Republicans. Conversely, 64% of Republicans viewed the term as an insult, compared to only 10% of Democrats.
These findings highlight the deep political and cultural divisions in America, with even seemingly innocuous terms like “woke” being used to promote delusional narratives. It also reflects the ongoing debate over issues of social justice and political correctness, which remain contentious topics in American society.
