Yes, Fentanyl is an addiction in America. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of opioid-related overdose deaths in 2020 shot up from around fifty thousand the previous year to nearly seventy thousand[1].
In addition, research from the RAND Corporation highlighted that fentanyl and other synthetic opioids have become the most dangerous illegal drugs in America, particularly east of the Mississippi[2].
The DEA also reported that synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, are the primary driver of overdose deaths in the United States[3].
Furthermore, fentanyl abuse statistics indicate that it is the world’s deadliest opioid, causing almost half of all overdose deaths nationwide[4].
Lastly, health experts reported that fentanyl was responsible for around 70 percent of the record 107,622 drug overdose deaths that struck the US in 2021[5].
