Israeli PM Addresses UN Amidst Diplomatic Whirlwind, Saudi-Israel Relations in Focus

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to address the United Nations General Assembly after a whirlwind week of diplomatic activities in the U.S. This week included a long-awaited meeting with President Joe Biden and the possibility of a historic peace agreement with Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman indicated that Saudi Arabia might establish diplomatic relations with Israel, stating, “Every day we get closer. It seems it’s for the first time, a real one – serious.” He emphasized that resolving the Palestinian Issue is crucial to this potential agreement, explaining, “For us, the Palestinian issue is very important. We need to solve that part, and we have ongoing negotiations. We hope it will lead to improvements in the lives of Palestinians and restore Israel as a significant player in the Middle East.”

During their meeting, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed his belief that, with U.S. assistance, a historic peace agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia is attainable. He highlighted the potential for such an agreement to contribute to ending the Arab-Israeli conflict, promoting reconciliation between the Islamic world and Israel, and advancing genuine peace with the Palestinians.

In response to the possible normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia and anticipated concessions to the Palestinian Authority, Rabbi Leo Dee, who lost his wife and daughters in a recent terror attack, penned an open letter to President Biden and Crown Prince bin Salman. He urged them to demand that the Palestinian Authority immediately revoke laws that reward terrorists, emphasizing the impact of such incentives on victims’ families.

Both Israel and Saudi Arabia see the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran as existential, with the Crown Prince warning that his country would pursue nuclear weapons if Iran acquires them.

To solidify the potential agreement, the Biden administration is considering a mutual defense pact with Saudi Arabia, which would commit the United States to defend the Desert Kingdom in case of an attack, a proposal subject to Senate approval.

If normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia materializes, it could bring about a transformative change in the Middle East.
